Miniature Horse Gestations

 

     At Kateland we were interested in looking at how long the miniature horses gestation period is and how predictable each minis gestation was from year to year for the same broodmare.  The horses were hand bred and the pregnancies were established by an ultrasound using the last breeding date.  In 2008 we had our first mule baby.  The mare had a gestation of 353 days.

After over 150 records over a period of 19 years we have been forced to conclude:

· The average gestation in 328 days

· The mare has her own average with a range of at least plus or minus ten days

· Maiden mares had an average gestation of 328 days with a range of 316-351 days

After all this record keeping it all comes down to start watching your broodmare at 300 days.
